The One and Only Exercise You Need to Get Fit Fast While Traveling

If there is one single exercise you can choose for the most benefit in the least amount of time, the burpee is hard to beat.

When you're on the road, staying in shape can be tough for a few reasons.

Busy schedules and limited access to gyms can lead many travelers to simply neglect their fitness and health.

What road warriors need is an exercise that requires no equipment and can be very effective in a short amount of time. There is no better exercise for travelers to learn to love more than the burpee. If there is one single exercise you can choose for the most benefit in the least amount of time, the burpee is hard to beat.

Why Burpees Are The Best

Think about the burpee for a second.

It's tough but fair.

In return for the hard work you put in when doing burpees, you're burning fat, building muscle and improving your conditioning in a very time-efficient manner. That's not a bad deal. The reason it's so effective is because it involves a ton of muscle groups working together all at once.

A proper burpee is a push-up to a squat to an explosive jump to a squat and back to a push-up again. The level of intensity involved in performing these many movements so quickly leads to increased metabolism, improved cardiovascular health and full body muscle activation.

How to Do a Burpee

To do a burpee the right way, perform every movement of the exercise fully. By doing this, you will get the maximum benefit and decrease risk of injury. Here are the six movements:

  1. Squat down and place your hands on the floor in front of you.
  2. Jump both feet back at the same time so you end up in the beginning of a push-up position.
  3. Lower yourself so your chest is touching the floor.
  4. Do a push-up so you are back at the starting position with your arms fully extended.
  5. Jump your feet back in towards your hands.
  6. Jump explosively into the air, reaching your arms overheard as you do so.

So what's next after you've mastered the burpee? Of course doing more and more of them seems logical and is certainly effective. You can also look to the many variations that exist to add some spice to your burpee fun. Here are seven great variations to try:
