The 9 Best Workout Apps for Overweight Beginners

The 9 Best Workout Apps for Overweight Beginners

Apps have changed our lives and that includes how we work out.

If you're trying to get yourself in shape, an app could be the perfect guide for getting you there. At the top of our list: Fitbod.

Instead of hiring a coach or personal trainer, you can download an app that will give you workouts, keep you accountable, and track your progress.

These are the best workout apps for overweight beginners:

  • Fitbod

  • Freeletics

  • Strava

  • Nike Training Club

  • Beachbody on Demand

  • Sworkit

  • Grokker

  • Aaptiv

  • Peloton

"Always keep a mindset that you can do it, you can achieve your goal. Never let anything pull you down. Be optimistic because the way you think affects your body greatly,” says Owais Shah from Insiderapps.

Let’s take a closer look at each one of these exceptional workout apps.

Fitbod

Fitbod uses AI-learning to develop a workout plan for you that includes exercises, sets, and repetitions based on your abilities, goals, and available gym equipment.

There is no free version of the app available besides the free trial. Without a subscription, you won't be able to start or log workouts.

You can, however, save and create workouts using the exercise library and view exercise demonstration videos and instructions.

Read our full review of Fitbod to learn more about the app and how it can help you.

A monthly subscription is $12.99 and a yearly subscription is $79.99, but you can use the discount code ‘TRAVEL25’ for an exclusive rate - $9.99 per month or $59.99 for a year of personal training.

Freeletics

There are a few different apps that make up the Freeletics package - Bodyweight (the most popular one), Gym, Nutrition, and Running. Within each one, there's a free version and a paid version.

The Bodyweight app might be the best option for travelers looking for quick, effective workouts that they can do anywhere. The free version is a fitness training program with 10-30 minute bodyweight workouts that require no equipment.

There are over 900 workout variations and they cover all of your major muscle groups. It comes with tutorial videos to help you with exercises you don't know and to get the right form on them.

The paid version is called "The Coach" and is a personalized digital trainer. It's a program developed for you based on your age, weight, goals, abilities, and availability.

Training and nutrition cost $3.35 a week, while training only costs $2.30 a week. With the purchase of either one, you'll get access to personalized training plans in the Bodyweight, Gym, and Running apps.

Strava

For many runners and cyclists, finding the time to run or cycle while traveling is just as essential as a morning cup of coffee. Things just aren't right without logging a few miles, no matter how busy your travel has you.

That's why Strava can be an essential travel companion. Strava will let you track your run, map your cycling route, analyze your training, and let you upload and share your stats - all for free.

Think social network for athletes - specifically runners and cyclists.

And it's great for traveling. Strava allows travelers to see which routes are most popular and where the good stops are along the way. With Strava Local, travelers can see a guide to major cities around the world with data sourced from a pool of millions of users.

Nike Training Club

Nike Training Club is basically a digital personal trainer that will travel anywhere in the world with you.  Get fit on the go with 160+ free workouts full of everything from yoga to strength training.

Nike Training Club is more ideal for anyone with access to a decent hotel gym.

The app is not limited to bodyweight training - there's a fair amount of dumbbell exercises. That's great, as long as you have them accessible. If you do, NTC is a great app - you'll get an actual workout plan, rather than just a list of workouts.

Most workouts are between 15 and 45 minutes long and you can choose between low, medium, and high intensity. The workouts offer variety and are well thought out - you know you'll get a good workout with NTC.

BeachBody on Demand

BeachBody on Demand has brought us some amazing workout programs, including Insanity, P90X, and 21 Day Fix.

Creator Shaun T is joined by a team of talented trainers to bring you workouts that will torch calories and build your strength on the way to achieving that body you've always wanted.

The best thing about BeachBody on Demand is how it can be streamed on your iPhone, iPad, laptop, Fire TV, Roku, Chromecast, or Apple TV.

This instant streaming makes it a perfect choice for anyone who travels frequently or wants to workout at home. The workouts are legit. The results are real.

Sworkit

Want a fitness app that makes working out fun and easy? Give Sworkit a shot. Fun workout names, good music, and quick but effective workouts make Sworkit the perfect app for a busy traveler.

Recently voted number one by the ACSM study by Florida University on instructional exercise standards, Sworkit will give you a hard-hitting workout in as little as five minutes.

Use guided video workouts, personalize workouts based on your goals, squeeze them in amidst your busy schedule, and get truly fit with this well-designed and fun to use app.

The free version is great. There's a large library of exercises, it's easy to navigate, and it's great for traveling. If you want to try the paid version of the app, it's $29.99 for a three-month subscription or $79.99 for an annual subscription.

Grokker

Grokker is a subscription health and fitness video company with over 3,700 expert-led video classes available anytime, anywhere, and on any device.

Whether you have five or fifty minutes, Grokker is great for traveling. You'll find workout routines in practices ranging from yoga and Pilates to Barre and HIIT.

You'll get a calendar, email reminders, challenges, programs, recipes, and mediation classes. Everything you need to stay on track while you travel.

The one downside to Grokker is that it's not free. You get a two-week free trial, but after that, it's $14.95 a month with a month-to-month agreement or $9.99 a month with an annual subscription.

Aaptiv

Aaptiv is an on-demand fitness app that gives you access to almost 3,000 trainer-guided and musically-charged workouts developed by certified personal trainers. And new workouts are being added weekly.

Called the “Spotify of fitness,” Aaptiv covers a wide variety of fitness regimens, including running, yoga, cycling, boxing, meditation, and stretching.

When you join, you’ll answer questions about your fitness goals and experience level. Aaptiv will then give you day-to-day classes to complete, guided audibly by their team of trainers. Unlike Freeletics, there are no video demonstrations of exercises.

Aaptiv costs $14.99 per month or $99 for the year, and you can try a free 30-day trial here.

Peloton

With the Peloton app, you’ll have access to a complete live and on-demand library of classes, including cycling, which is what Peloton is best known for. There’s also boot camp, running, outdoor, strength, yoga, and guided meditation classes.

It costs $19.49 a month and grants users access to all virtual and live classes on iOS, Android, and the web. You can try it with a 14-day free trial.

All of these apps are ideal for working out at home and you can learn more about home gyms here.
